Resume keywords · Legal counsel

A legal resume needs jurisdiction, subject matter, and decision scope.

Legal titles do not travel cleanly between jurisdictions. A useful English resume states qualification status, jurisdiction, practice area, sector, client group, and the boundary between drafting, advice, negotiation, and final approval. Never translate a French title into solicitor unless formally admitted.

Three rewritten resume bullets

The figures below are examples. Replace them with your own evidence—the structure is reusable, the content is not.

Contract work without volume or authority

Drafted and reviewed commercial contracts for the business.

Drafted and negotiated 70+ annual SaaS, supplier, and data-processing agreements across the UK and EEA, owned positions up to the approved risk threshold, and reduced median contract turnaround from 18 to 11 days.

Agreement types, volume, jurisdictions, authority boundary, and cycle outcome establish the real legal scope.

Data protection advice written broadly

Advised the company on GDPR compliance.

Completed 14 data-protection impact assessments for product launches, negotiated controller-processor clauses, and created an escalation checklist that reduced late privacy reviews by 63% in two quarters.

Specific instruments, contracts, process change, and measured timeliness replace a blanket compliance claim.

Stakeholder work with no decision

Worked closely with senior business stakeholders.

Advised Sales and Product directors on a high-risk customer term, presented three liability options with commercial impact, and secured an approved fallback that preserved the £1.2m deal without accepting unlimited exposure.

The issue, audience, options, recommendation, commercial outcome, and protected risk show practical counsel.

07

ATS pitfalls specific to this role

Solicitor is a protected qualification claim

Do not translate juriste, lawyer, counsel, or legal adviser into solicitor unless formally admitted in the named jurisdiction.

Jurisdiction belongs next to the practice area

Commercial contracts under English law and EU regulatory work are different searches. State both accurately.

SQE stage must be precise

Passed SQE1, passed SQE2, qualifying work experience, and admitted solicitor are different statuses.

Sector is a legal keyword

Financial services, technology, healthcare, energy, public procurement, and consumer products bring different regulation and risk.

08

What to leave out

  • Qualified solicitor when not admitted

Use your exact degree, exam, work-experience, admission, or foreign-qualified status.

  • Confidential matter details

Describe agreement type, risk, jurisdiction, and outcome without privileged or identifying information.

  • Ensured full compliance

No legal function eliminates all risk. State the control, advice, remediation, or decision delivered.

  • Legal jargon without business outcome

Translate the issue into risk, options, decision, time, cost, or protected value.
