Resume keywords · Accountant
An accountant resume should define the level of ownership.
Two accountants can list journals, reconciliations, and reporting while operating at very different levels. The difference is ownership: which entities, ledgers, deadlines, standards, systems, and review points were yours. State that boundary clearly and the keywords become evidence rather than a task list.

Tools and software
Finance systems are often exact-match filters because employers value a shorter ramp-up. Include the product and module you used, not an unexplained ERP acronym.

Three rewritten resume bullets
The figures below are examples. Replace them with your own evidence—the structure is reusable, the content is not.
A close process written as a routine task
Responsible for month-end journals and reconciliations.
Owned the five-day month-end close for three UK entities, posting accruals and prepayments, reconciling 24 balance-sheet accounts, and clearing review points before group submission on working day six.
The rewrite establishes entities, deadline, account volume, technical work, and review boundary.
Accounts payable with no operating scale
Processed supplier invoices and payment runs.
Managed accounts payable for 420 active suppliers across two entities, processed 1,800 monthly invoices in SAP, and introduced a duplicate-invoice check that prevented £36k of attempted repeat payments in one year.
Volume, system, control, and avoided loss make the responsibility comparable and credible.
Excel claimed without a use case
Advanced Excel skills and strong attention to detail.
Rebuilt the monthly revenue reconciliation in Power Query, combining six source files with exception checks and reducing preparation time from two days to three hours.
A defined process, feature, control, and time saving prove both Excel depth and accuracy.
07
ATS pitfalls specific to this role
Financial and management accounting use different evidence
Financial accounting emphasises close, controls, reporting, standards, and audit. Management accounting emphasises budgets, forecasts, variance, and decision support. Lead with the vocabulary of the target role.
Qualification status must be unambiguous
“Studying ACCA” is weaker than an accurate status such as “ACCA part-qualified—9 of 13 exams completed”. Never imply membership you do not hold.
The ERP module matters
SAP alone does not show whether you worked in FI, CO, AP, fixed assets, or reporting. Add the module or process naturally within the experience.
Close deadlines reveal seniority
Working day five, group submission, review ownership, and entity count give the reader a common scale that task lists cannot.
08
What to leave out
Detail-oriented and numerate
These are minimum expectations. Demonstrate them through a reconciled balance, control, deadline, or error reduction.
Responsible for all accounting duties
Define the ledgers, entities, reports, tax work, and review boundary instead.
Every finance system encountered
Keep systems used with enough depth to answer process-specific questions in an interview.
Company revenue presented as your result
Use the volume you processed, close you delivered, control you improved, or decision you supported.

Frequently asked questions
Should I show a part-qualified status?+
Yes. Name the body, current status, exams completed, and expected next step accurately. Employers often search specifically for part-qualified candidates.
How do I move from practice to industry?+
Translate client work into transferable evidence: close, reconciliations, reporting, controls, audit, and explaining figures to non-accountants. Show interest in owning one organisation in depth.
Should I quantify invoice or account volumes?+
Yes. Suppliers, invoices, entities, currencies, reconciliations, and close days provide useful scale without exposing confidential company results.
What if I have not used the requested software?+
Apply when your accounting foundation matches, show comparable systems, and be precise about the gap. Do not add software you have never used.
