Resume keywords · Engineer

“Engineer” is not a searchable specialism on its own.

Mechanical, electrical, civil, manufacturing, and systems engineers share a title but not a hiring search. Your headline must state the discipline; each experience must then show the system, standard, tool, constraint, and verified outcome behind the engineering work.

01

Job titles recruiters search for

These titles can describe overlapping work, but keyword searches treat them as different queries. Put the title used in the vacancy at the top of your resume when it accurately describes your experience.

  • Mechanical Engineer
  • Electrical Engineer
  • Manufacturing Engineer
  • Systems Engineer
  • Civil Engineer
  • Design Engineer
  • Process Engineer

02

Technical skills

Lead with your discipline and the engineering lifecycle stages you owned. Generic problem-solving language will not match a specialist vacancy.

  • Engineering designEssential

Name the system, design stage, constraints, and approval responsibility.

Also write: detailed design · design development · technical design

  • Requirements engineering

Useful in systems and regulated work when you can show traceability and verification.

Also write: requirements management · traceability

  • Failure mode and effects analysis

A precise risk-analysis term in manufacturing, product, and reliability engineering.

Also write: FMEA · DFMEA · PFMEA

  • Design verification

State test method, acceptance criteria, non-conformance, and sign-off boundary.

Also write: verification and validation · V&V · qualification testing

  • Root cause analysis

Connect the method to a failure, corrective action, and recurrence result.

    Also write: RCA · 8D · 5 Whys

03

Tools and software

Software is discipline-specific and often filtered exactly. Name versions or modules only when they materially affected the work.

  • AutoCAD

State 2D or 3D use and the drawing, layout, or documentation owned.

    Also write: Autodesk AutoCAD

  • SolidWorks

Relevant to mechanical design when connected to assemblies, drawings, simulation, or release.

    Also write: SolidWorks CAD

  • MATLAB

Useful for modelling, control, analysis, and automation when the application is named.

    Also write: Simulink

  • ANSYS

A specialist filter for simulation; state structural, thermal, fluid, or electromagnetic analysis.

    Also write: FEA · CFD

  • Siemens Teamcenter

Signals product-lifecycle and controlled engineering data experience.

    Also write: PLM · Windchill

04

Qualifications and certifications

Professional status and safety credentials are market- and discipline-specific. Write the exact body, grade, and current status.

  • Chartered Engineer

A recognised UK professional registration. Use CEng only when formally awarded.

Also write: CEng · Engineering Council

  • Incorporated Engineer

A recognised professional registration for applied engineering responsibility.

    Also write: IEng

  • Engineering degree

State discipline, accreditation, institution, and classification where relevant.

Also write: BEng · MEng · MSc Engineering

  • NEBOSH

Relevant where engineering leadership includes occupational safety responsibility.

    Also write: NEBOSH General Certificate

05

Professional skills

Technical judgement becomes credible through controlled change, documented decisions, supplier challenge, and safe delivery.

  • Technical documentation

Name drawings, specifications, calculations, test reports, or release packs.

Also write: engineering drawings · technical specifications

  • Change control

Show impact assessment, approval, configuration, and implementation.

Also write: engineering change · ECR · ECO

  • Supplier technical management

Include specifications, design reviews, non-conformance, and acceptance.

Also write: supplier quality · vendor engineering

  • Continuous improvement

State the process measure, engineering change, and sustained result.

Also write: Lean engineering · Kaizen

Three rewritten resume bullets

The figures below are examples. Replace them with your own evidence—the structure is reusable, the content is not.

Design work without a system or constraint

Designed mechanical components using SolidWorks.

Designed and released 23 SolidWorks components for a 12-bar dosing assembly, reducing machined part count by 18% while meeting the existing envelope and pressure-test specification.

The rewrite identifies the system, tool, volume, constraint, design change, and verified result.

A production problem described vaguely

Investigated manufacturing issues and implemented improvements.

Led an 8D investigation into repeated seal failures on line 4, traced the cause to fixture variation, and introduced a go/no-go check that reduced weekly scrap from 6.4% to 1.1%.

Method, defect, root cause, corrective control, and sustained metric demonstrate engineering judgement.

Testing with no ownership boundary

Supported product testing and validation.

Authored the verification plan for 41 electrical requirements, coordinated environmental and EMC testing, and closed 12 non-conformances before design release with full requirements traceability.

The rewrite distinguishes authored work from support and names scale, test domains, defects, and release outcome.

07

ATS pitfalls specific to this role

Discipline belongs in the headline

Engineer alone matches too broadly. Use Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, Manufacturing, Systems, Process, or another accurate discipline.

A standard is not inferred from the sector

If a vacancy filters for ISO, IEC, BS, ASME, or another standard you used, write its exact reference in context.

CAD platforms are not interchangeable

AutoCAD, SolidWorks, CATIA, Creo, and Revit are separate searches. List only platforms used to a defensible level.

Chartered status must be exact

Do not write CEng, IEng, or EngTech unless registered. “Working toward CEng” should include the institution and genuine stage.

08

What to leave out

  • Innovative problem solver

Use one technical decision, constraint, verification method, and result.

  • Every engineering package seen at university

Prioritise tools used in substantial design, analysis, or production work.

  • Confidential drawings as images

Protect intellectual property and keep ATS-readable evidence in text.

  • Improved efficiency with no unit

Name cycle time, scrap, energy, weight, cost, reliability, or another engineering measure.

09

Frequently asked questions

Should I create a different resume for each engineering discipline?+

Yes when the roles require different systems, standards, and tools. Keep one truthful history but reorder evidence around the target discipline.

How should I show chartered status?+

Use the exact registration and professional body. If working toward it, state the current stage without implying award.

Can I include confidential projects?+

Describe the system category, scale, constraint, method, and result without customer names or protected design details.

Do university projects count?+

Early in a career, yes. Treat them like engineering work: requirements, tools, trade-offs, verification, and outcome.
